Message from the Director

Greetings!

Last month, we hosted an exciting Media Training with Brown Miller Communications! The fellows learned the differences between various types of media outlets and how to craft a compelling story. Additionally, they were able to put what they learned into practice with live on camera mock interviews.

November 14th is Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day! In May 2018, a group of fifth-graders from Martin Elementary School in South San Francisco, California, learned about Ruby and wanted to continue Ruby's legacy in their own way, walking to school. Communities across the country are encouraged to walk and roll to school to celebrate the importance of safe and active travel for children. To kick off the new program year for the Fellowship, we hosted a webinar with a presentation from Safe Routes Partnership, sharing the benefits of Safe Routes to School programs and opportunities for health professionals to partner with Safe Routes in their local communities.

Looking forward, we are partnering with Brown Miller Communications to plan a Persuasive Narrative Series Workshop for Fellows in Spring 2024. This two-part workshop will provide an opportunity for Fellows to learn how to leverage the "power of the white coat" to share their clinical experiences in a way that inspires change in local communities. Look out for more information coming soon.

By: Dr. Kristen Hughes

Champion Provider Fellow (Cohort 4, Santa Barbara County)

Anthony is a 17-year-old young man who was brought to my clinic by his mother for behavioral concerns.

“He’s spending more and more time alone in his room”.

Anthony sits on the exam table with his shoulders slumped, eyes down, fidgeting with his hands.

“I don’t know why she brought me here. I’m fine.” he says.  Read more.

S 1568/HR 3204: Universal School Meals Program Act of 2023

California is among five states that have passed state legislation providing free meals to all children attending public schools. The proposed federal Universal School Meals Program Act of 2023 would provide healthy meals at public schools nationwide regardless of family income. Other benefits include increasing school reimbursement rates for meals, reimbursing schools for meal debt, and expanding summer meal programs.

Screening for Beverage Consumption in Early Childhood Using Electronic Health Records: Implementation Toolkit for Health Care Systems

Healthy Eating Research (HER) (2023)

Healthy Eating Research (HER) has developed an exciting new resource for pediatricians and health care organizations. The toolkit aims to support health care systems in their efforts to reduce consumption of sugary beverages in early childhood.

The primary goal of the toolkit is to provide health care systems and providers with tools and resources to effectively incorporate and implement a beverage screener within the electronic health record system.

Fresh Start: A Comprehensive Pilot Produce Prescription Program to Improve Food Literacy and Glycemic Control in Rural, Uninsured Patients

Sastre LR, Stroud BJ. American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. 2023;0(0). doi:10.1177/15598276231195776

Produce prescription (PRx) programs improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables. However, many programs lack culinary focused nutrition education or behavioral support to promote sustainable lifestyle changes. The pilot Fresh Start PRx (FSPRx) program was a 20-week PRx program, consisting of telephone-based health coaching, group education classes, and a PRx. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the FSPRx program on food literacy, lifestyle behaviors, and health outcomes (e.g., glycemic control) with rural, uninsured patients with type-2 diabetes. By the end of the study, the FSPRx program demonstrated significant improvement in glycemic control, fruit and vegetable consumption, and food literacy with a highly vulnerable, medically under-resourced population—rural uninsured patients with type-2 diabetes.

Virtual Public Meeting and Listening Sessions on Strategies to Reduce Added Sugars Consumption in the United States

  • Virtual Public Meeting: November 6, 2023
  • Virtual Listening Sessions: November 7-8, 2023

The White House Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health reported that the intake of added sugars for most Americans is higher than what is recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and called for the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), in collaboration with other United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) divisions and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), to hold a public meeting regarding future steps that can be taken to reduce added sugar consumption in the United States. In response, the FDA will host, in collaboration with other federal partners, a virtual public meeting followed by virtual public listening sessions to discuss strategies for reducing added sugar consumption in the United States.
